Who’s covered

ICBC coverage after a car accident, however it happened

Enhanced Care is care-based, not fault-based. If you were injured by a vehicle in BC, treatment benefits apply — whether or not you caused the crash, and even if you don’t own a car.

A Synergy Rehab therapist performing manual therapy on a patient's back

Drivers & passengers

Everyone in the vehicle is entitled to their own treatment benefits under the same claim — each person books with the same claim number.

Cyclists

Doored, right-hooked, or clipped by a car? You’re covered under ICBC Enhanced Care — you don’t need your own auto insurance policy.

Pedestrians

Struck by a vehicle while walking? Report the accident to ICBC to get a claim number, then book your assessment — your treatment is covered.

At-fault drivers

Coverage doesn’t depend on a fault decision. If you caused the crash, your recovery benefits — including pre-approved treatment — still apply in full.

Checklist

What to expect at your first visit

Plan for a little longer than a routine visit — the exact length varies with your injuries. Your therapist takes the history of the crash, examines movement and strength, explains what they have found, and starts treatment the same visit. You will leave with a plan and usually a short home programme. Wear clothing you can move in.

Glossary

ICBC claims glossary: your ICBC recovery specialist, treatment plan and more

Claim paperwork and everyday speech rarely use the same word for the same thing. These are the ones that cause the most confusion after a crash.

Enhanced Carepeople say: “no-fault”, “the new ICBC rules”
The care-based model covering crashes on or after May 1st, 2021. Benefits do not depend on who caused the crash.
Part 7 benefitspeople say: “my Part 7s”
The accident benefits under the pre-2021 system. Still widely referred to online, but Enhanced Care governs any crash after May 1st, 2021.
Recovery specialistpeople say: “my adjuster”
The ICBC contact supporting your recovery and treatment approvals.
Pre-authorized treatmentpeople say: “my 25 sessions”
Treatment ICBC has approved in advance for the first 12 weeks, so no one has to sign it off before you start.
Treatment planpeople say: “the extension”, “more sessions”
The document your physiotherapist submits recommending further care beyond the pre-approved window, with the clinical reasoning behind it.
Independent Medical Examination (IME)people say: “ICBC’s doctor”
An assessment by a third-party practitioner arranged by ICBC. It is a claim process, not part of your treatment — questions about it go to ICBC.

FAQ

ICBC treatment, answered

The questions people ask us in the first week after a crash.

Just been in an accident

I just got injured in a car accident in the Lower Mainland — what should I do first?

Report the crash to ICBC to open a claim, either online at icbc.com or by calling Dial-a-Claim at 604-520-8222 (Lower Mainland) or 1-800-910-4222 (toll-free). ICBC gives you a claim number immediately. With that number alone you can book physiotherapy — under Enhanced Care your first 12 weeks of treatment are pre-approved, so you do not need a doctor’s referral or your adjuster’s approval. Synergy Rehab has 19+ clinics across the Lower Mainland (Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Delta, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford), bills ICBC directly, and charges no user fees. The ICBC website also lists claim centre locations if you need to visit one in person, and your ICBC recovery specialist can confirm your coverage through ICBC at any point.

How soon after a car accident should I start treatment?

As soon as you can. Crash-related symptoms such as neck stiffness, headaches and dizziness often appear 24 to 72 hours after the collision. An early assessment establishes a baseline and starts your recovery plan while your 12-week pre-approval window is open.

How long do I have to start ICBC-covered treatment after my accident?

Your pre-approved treatment window runs for 12 weeks from the date of your accident. Treatment started inside that window needs no additional approval. If you need care beyond 12 weeks, your physiotherapist submits a treatment plan to ICBC before the window closes.

Cost and coverage

How much does ICBC treatment cost at Synergy Rehab?

$0. Synergy Rehab bills ICBC directly at ICBC’s published treatment rates and does not charge user fees, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to you for pre-approved ICBC treatments.

Does ICBC cover 100% of my treatment?

For pre-approved treatments within your first 12 weeks, ICBC pays the treatment cost directly to the clinic. Some clinics add a user fee on top of what ICBC pays; Synergy Rehab does not, so your pre-approved sessions are fully covered with nothing to pay at the desk.

Do I have to pay upfront and get reimbursed by ICBC?

No. Synergy Rehab direct-bills ICBC for pre-approved treatment, so you do not pay and wait for reimbursement. You give us your claim number at your first visit and we handle the billing.

How many sessions does ICBC pre-approve?

Wondering how many physiotherapy sessions you get? For accidents on or after May 1st, 2021, ICBC pre-approves 25 Physiotherapy sessions, 25 Chiropractic sessions, 12 Massage Therapy sessions, 12 Kinesiology sessions and 12 Acupuncture sessions within the first 12 weeks after your accident — no approval calls required. ICBC also pre-approves counselling sessions under Enhanced Care.

Does ICBC cover physiotherapy, massage therapy, kinesiology and acupuncture?

The ICBC-covered services we provide are all pre-approved within your first 12 weeks, each with its own session allowance: Physiotherapy (25), Chiropractic (25), Massage Therapy (12), Kinesiology (12), Acupuncture (12) and Clinical Counselling (12). The allowances are separate, so using one does not reduce another. Synergy Rehab direct-bills ICBC for all of them, at 19 clinics from Vancouver to Abbotsford.

What happens if I still need treatment after 12 weeks?

One to two weeks before your 12-week pre-approval window ends, your physiotherapist submits a treatment plan to ICBC recommending further care, with the clinical rationale. If ICBC approves it, your treatment continues without interruption — we handle the paperwork for you.

Eligibility

Do I need a doctor’s referral for ICBC treatment?

No. Physiotherapists are primary-care practitioners in British Columbia, and under ICBC’s Enhanced Care model your first 12 weeks of treatment are pre-approved. You can book directly with Synergy Rehab using only your ICBC claim number — no referral, and no adjuster approval needed to start.

Am I covered if the accident was my fault?

Yes. Enhanced Care benefits are care-based, not fault-based. Your treatment coverage applies regardless of who caused the crash, and it is not affected by any legal process.

I was hit while cycling or walking — does ICBC cover my treatment?

Yes. Cyclists and pedestrians injured by a vehicle in British Columbia are covered under ICBC Enhanced Care, even if you do not own a car or hold your own auto insurance policy. Report the accident to ICBC to receive a claim number, then book your assessment.

I was a passenger, not the driver — do I get my own treatment?

Yes. Every injured person in the vehicle is entitled to their own pre-approved treatment benefits. Passengers book with the same claim number as the driver and each receive their own assessment and treatment plan.

Booking

How do I book with just an ICBC claim number?

Book online at synergyrehabilitation.ca/booking-page, choose the Synergy Rehab clinic nearest you, and select an ICBC assessment. Bring your claim number, date of accident, and Personal Health Number to the first visit. Nothing else is required — we verify your coverage and bill ICBC directly.

What do I need to book an ICBC appointment?

Three things: your ICBC claim number, the date of your accident, and your Personal Health Number (on your BC Services Card). If you have not reported the crash yet, start your claim online at icbc.com or call ICBC Dial-a-Claim at 604-520-8222, then book.

Where can I get ICBC physiotherapy in the Lower Mainland?

Synergy Rehab operates 19+ clinics across BC’s Lower Mainland, including Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Delta, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford. Every location accepts ICBC claims, direct-bills ICBC, and charges no user fees on pre-approved care. Book online to see the clinics and appointment times nearest you.

Can I switch to Synergy Rehab if I already started treatment somewhere else?

Yes. You can change providers during your claim. Any sessions already used count toward your pre-approved totals; bring your claim number and let us know roughly how many sessions you have had, and we continue from there.

Around the Lower Mainland

Where can I get ICBC physiotherapy in Surrey?

Synergy Rehab has eleven Surrey clinics that treat ICBC claims: Cedar Hills, Strawberry Hill, Newton 72 Ave, Sullivan Heights, King George, Central City, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, Clayton Corners, Clayton Heights and South Surrey. Each one direct-bills ICBC with no user fees, and each has its own online booking page, so you can pick the one nearest your home, work or the corridor you were driving.

Is there an ICBC physiotherapy clinic near me in Vancouver or Burnaby?

Yes. The Vancouver clinic is in Kitsilano on W 16th Avenue, serving Point Grey, Dunbar, Arbutus Ridge and the Broadway corridor. The Burnaby clinic is on Canada Way, close to Metrotown, Brentwood and the Highway 1 and Lougheed routes. New Westminster is a third option on East Columbia Street near Sapperton. All three accept ICBC claims and bill ICBC directly.

Can I get ICBC treatment in Langley, Abbotsford or the Fraser Valley?

Yes. The Langley clinic is in Willowbrook on 204 Street, covering Walnut Grove, Murrayville and Aldergrove, and the Abbotsford clinic is on Townline Road, covering Clearbrook and the Highway 1 interchanges. Your ICBC pre-approval works the same way there as anywhere else in the Lower Mainland — no referral, no adjuster call, no user fees.

Does it matter which Lower Mainland clinic I book for my ICBC claim?

No. Your ICBC claim is not tied to a location, so you can start at whichever Synergy Rehab clinic is most convenient and switch later — to one nearer work, or nearer home once you are driving again. Sessions already used count toward the same pre-approved totals wherever you attend.

I was in a crash outside the Lower Mainland. Can I still be treated here?

Yes. ICBC coverage follows you, not the crash site. If the accident happened elsewhere in British Columbia but you live or work in the Lower Mainland, you can use your pre-approved treatment at any Synergy Rehab clinic. Bring the same three things: your claim number, the date of the accident, and your Personal Health Number.

Your treatment and your claim

I paid for treatment myself. Can I get that money back?

Usually yes. ICBC asks you to submit a claim for medical expenses within 180 days (six months) of the expense. Keep your receipts and give them to ICBC with your claim number. If you are being treated with us we bill ICBC directly, so this mostly applies to treatment you paid for elsewhere before your claim was open.

What does my therapist send to ICBC?

Standard ICBC reporting: an initial assessment report, and a treatment plan when further care is recommended. These describe your injuries, the objective findings and your functional progress, so ICBC has what it needs to support the next stage of your recovery. Your day-to-day session notes are your clinical record and are not routinely sent. Reports go to ICBC with your consent as part of your claim.

Can I switch to a Synergy Rehab clinic closer to home partway through?

Yes. Your claim isn’t tied to a location, and sessions already used simply count toward the same pre-approved totals. Moving between Synergy Rehab clinics keeps your treatment on one record, which makes the reporting cleaner if an extension is needed later. Tell the new clinic your claim number and roughly how many sessions you’ve had.

Can I combine different treatments, or have two on the same day?

Yes. Each treatment type draws on its own pre-approved allowance — Physiotherapy (25), Chiropractic (25), Massage Therapy (12), Kinesiology (12), Acupuncture (12) and Clinical Counselling (12) — so combining them is fine, and it is often how a recovery week is structured. What you cannot do is stack two sessions of the same treatment type to make one longer appointment. Your therapists work from the same record, so the plan stays joined up.

I felt fine at the scene and only started hurting days later. Is it too late?

No — that is the normal pattern, not the exception. Whiplash symptoms, headaches and concussion symptoms commonly surface 24 to 72 hours after impact once the adrenaline has gone. Report the crash to ICBC to open your claim, then book an assessment. Your 12-week window runs from the date of the accident, so the sooner you start the more of it you keep.

My neck and back were already bad before the crash. Am I still covered?

A pre-existing problem doesn’t disqualify you. What matters clinically is how the collision changed things — a flare-up or aggravation of an existing condition is still an injury from the crash. Tell your physiotherapist about the history at your assessment so it’s documented properly from the start, which is what protects the claim later.

What actually happens at the first appointment?

Your therapist takes the history of the crash and your symptoms, examines movement, strength and the structures involved, explains what they have found, and starts treatment the same visit. You will leave with a plan and usually a short home programme. Appointment length varies with your injuries, so allow a little extra time for this first one. Wear clothing you can move in, and bring your claim number, accident date and Personal Health Number.
